Boy or Girl? The 7 Best Gender Reveal Ideas

One of the newest trends is to have a Gender Reveal party to announce the sex of a baby.  This is done not only for the guests, but a surprise to the expecting parents as well.

I have to admit, there are so many cute ways to throw one of these parties, I almost wish I wanted to find out the sex of my babies before they come out!  I found out with my oldest, but I had never heard of such a thing in 2002 (and Pinterest was not a thing!)

I have been combing the internet for the top gender reveal ideas so you can find them all in one place.  I even started a Pinterest board for you to access these ideas easily.

Baked Goodies

This is one of the most popular options.  There seems to be no limit on the ideas on how to pull this one off.  Some of the ideas that have been used include cake, cupcakes, and cake pops.  With cake pops they can have blue or pink cake inside and cupcakes filled with pink or blue frosting in the center.  Cakes have so many options because of their size.  You can go with colored cake or frosting inside, but you can also make it like a piñata!  It can be filled with pink or blue candy that spills out when you cut the cake for all to see!!

Cars, Cars, Cars

Are you a couple who likes all things cars?  Whether it is racing them or fixing them are you looking for a way to incorporate cars into your gender reveal?  There is a way!  Have a trusted friend make colored dust by putting the corresponding chalk in a blender.  They can put the dust in the exhaust with a paper cup covering it.  When you rev the engine, the cup falls off and a big blue (or pink) dust cloud explodes before your eyes!

It’s in the Water

Bath bombs!  More than just a relaxing treat.  You can order bath bombs to help you celebrate!!  At your party, someone can set up a big, clear glass punch bowl in the center of a table.  When all eyes are on you and your partner, you drop a white bath bomb you specially ordered.  It magically begins to turn the water a brilliant blue or precious pink!!

Balloons

Balloons are another popular option that can be incorporated in many different ways.  One of the most popular choices is to have a giant box set up with colored question marks decorating it.  When it is opened the balloon color of choice pops up and announces the gender to you and all of your guests.  Some choose to have two boxes, one for girl and one for boy, suspended above the couple with a string hanging out of both.  The strings are pulled to open the boxes and while one box is empty, the other cascades colorful balloons over the happy couple!  Another option is to fill black balloons with colored paint.  Throwing darts at the balloons, they burst and reveal boy or girl in front of everyone!!

Piñata

Another fun choice is a piñata.  This option is easy to figure out.  Have someone close to you fill it with candy in the color you choose to correspond with the gender.  When you break it open, it becomes clear to all what you are expecting!

Participation

A fun option is to let your guests participate in the reveal!  What better way to find out and celebrate your gender reveal to actually include everyone who came to celebrate with you?  This is another time the options are without limits.  You can have specially ordered confetti sticks that release colorful glitter.  Another option is to fill water guns and the expecting couple wears white.  The guests than spray the happy couple and show everyone what color wins this round.  One of the most popular is to give everyone a can of silly string, with the colored label replaced, and set them loose simultaneously on the excited couple!

A Picture is Worth a Thousand Words

Sometimes a party is not an option.  You may not live near your family or you just may not be feeling up to having a big shindig.  Whatever the reason, you still have options to make revealing the gender or your growing abdomen fun and exciting.  With a picture you can go as simple as shooting a quick picture on your phone to hiring a professional photographer to help, and when you go the route of a professional you have the added bonus of their editing skills to make the photos magical!  You can involve your older kids or pets in these kinds of announcements.  Simply wearing white and having them leave a hand or paw print with paint on your shirt is a common choice.  You can bring balloons in again.  This time you and your partner each hold one bunch of opposite colors, let go of the gender baby is not and keep hold of the right color.  Gum is another fun choice.  Each of you can blow a bubble and pop the wrong color leaving the right color bubble for all to see.  When we talk about the editing magic of a professional photographer, think GLITTER!  You cup your hands and blow the color glitter towards the camera and the photographer can either enhance, or the cleaner option…add it in for you using their software!

All of these options can be done for as thrifty or as extravagant as you choose.  You are not limited to pink and blue either.  You set the tone and decide what represents girl and boy for you.  Perhaps you choose to go with lilac for a girl and hunter green for a boy.  This is your party and you get to celebrate how you want!  The most important thing to keep in mind, find someone you can trust to help organize and be in charge of getting the correct colors for the reveal.  All you need to do is bring an envelope to your ultrasound with you and ask the tech to write it on a paper, fold it, stick it in the envelope, and seal.  This can be delivered to the baker of your choice or to your party planner and let the surprises reign down on you and your guests!
